Mitchell announces the initial results of their new dataanalysis program specifically focused on understanding the vehicleand collision factors that impact injury patterns in motor vehicleaccidents. Mitchell provides technology, connectivity, andinformation solutions to the property & casualty claims andcollision repair industries,

According to Keith Peterson, vice president of advancedanalytics and consulting, an early finding is that low impact, rearpoint of impact claims generate two to three times the amount ofmedical services and last roughly 30 percent longer when they occurin Florida versus other states.

“These claims are characterized near exclusively by a painmanagement course of care versus traditional medicalinterventions,” says Peterson.

The findings highlight the correlation between vehicle damageand the injuries likely in an accident, but also quantify how anarray of geographic and economic factors drives insurance claimoutcomes, according to Peterson.

The ongoing program, led by Mitchell ClaimsLab, a claimsanalytics unit of Mitchell, is made possible by the combination ofdata from across Mitchell's auto casualty, physicaldamage, and workers' compensation businesses, to create ananalysis and research resource—the National Impact InjuryDatabase.

Launched in 2012, the database combines more than 87 millionmedical bill and estimate transactions from the past six years. Itis one of the largest data resources of its kind covering theUnited States.

With access to these data, “we are now able to apply scientificanalysis and understand ways to manage the excessive cost of claimscaused by fraud and buildup,” says Dave Torrence, executive vicepresident and general manager, Auto Casualty Solutions. “Wecan also gain more insight into what kinds of claims warrantgreater attention in the adjudication process.”

Torrence also revealed an aggressive roadmap for using theresearch program to enhance its core offerings and add value toinsurance clients.

“Over the course of 2013, we will be expanding our focus todevelop a First Notice of Loss (FNOL) medical triage solution basedon predictive scoring to improve claim risk identification andsegmentation,” he says. “Mitchell is uniquely placed to offerworkflow solutions that enable rapid analysis, implementation, andongoing measurement of expanded bill review and claimssolutions.”
