Home insurance costs for owner-occupied dwelling premiums increased an average of 11.3% in 2023, with 25 states seeing a rate change of at least 10% for the year, according to data from S&P Global. Homeowners in Texas saw the largest rate increase in 2023 at 23.3%, followed by Arizona at 21.8% and Utah at 20.3%. Texas and Arizona are two of five states — also including Oregon, Oklahoma and Colorado — that saw double-digit rate increases in both 2022 and 2023. Homeowners in Hawaii experienced the smallest premium growth at 1.8%, followed by Vermont (3.3%), Delaware (3.9%) and Mississippi (3.9%). Nationwide, the cumulative growth in home insurance premiums was 18.2% from 2022 to 2023, and 33.8% from 2018 to 2023. The average homeowner paid $2,377 to insure their house in 2023, and Insurify predicts 2024 will see rates go up another 6%, bumping that average to $2,522 for the year. Floridians paid the most for home insurance in 2023 by a large margin, with an average annual rate of $10,996. Louisianans had the second-highest annual homeowner policy premiums at $6,354.
