The AVMA noted that animals bite for many reasons and that any dog, even those that are well trained, can bite. To help prevent incidents of dog bites, the veterinary organization recommends the following:

Ensure your pet's health by scheduling regular check-ups with a veterinarian to catch hidden illnesses or injuries, which could lead to aggressive behavior.
Prioritize proper socialization by gradually exposing your dog to various environments, people and animals to build confidence throughout their life.
Introduce new experiences slowly and watch for signs of comfort in your dog to prevent overwhelming them in unfamiliar situations.
Educate yourself on your dog's needs and positive training methods, understanding their body language to advocate for them effectively.
Respect other pet owners by asking permission before approaching their dog and being aware of signs indicating whether the dog is open to interaction.
Always walk your dog on a leash and stay attentive to changes in their behavior that might indicate discomfort.
Monitor your dog's activity to prevent potential accidents or injuries to them or others.
