While scenic views and winding roads might make for great Sunday-drive material, they hardly account for many motorists' day-to-day experiences, which, like auto insurance rates, vary wildly by state. Road conditions, repair costs, insurance premiums and uninsured motorists can all impact the enjoyment — or frustration — of driving. To get a better grasp on where drivers have the best all-around experience, Carinsurance.com ranked each state on eight factors:
"It's important to note that no state aced or failed every metric — instead, states may perform well in one area and come near the bottom in another," Les Masterson, managing editor and insurance analyst for Carinsurance.com, said in a release. California was once again the worst state for drivers due to high average gas prices, high repair costs, poor road conditions and traffic congestion problems, according to research from Carinsurance.com. Louisiana also did poorly in this year's ranking, coming in 49th. While motorists in the Pelican State enjoy one of the lowest average gas prices, they also face one of the highest auto insurance rates and the most crash-related fatalities. When it came to annual costs associated with repairs from poor road conditions, New Jersey drivers shelled out the most at an average of $601, with California and Hawaii following. The above slideshow showcases Carinsurance.com's ranking of the 10 best states for drivers in 2021. Related:
