Claims News Service, Sept.8, 9:04 a.m. EST — The following is a report from Guy Carpenter, a global risk and reinsurance specialist and a part of the Marsh & McLennan Companies.
Tropical Storm Florence is located approximately 445 miles north-east of the northern Leeward Islands and packs sustained winds of around 50 miles per hour, according to the National Hurricane Center (NHC). Florence is traveling in a west-northwest direction and this motion is expected to continue over the next 24 hours as the storm strengthens. Florence is a very large storm and tropical storm-force winds extend 405 miles from the center.
The NHC said Florence is expected to start turning to the north-west on Saturday before taking a more northerly track. The storm is expected to strengthen during this time and become a Category 1 hurricane, with further intensification expected thereafter. The long-term forecast for Florence, subject to wide margins of error, has the storm curving away from the United States over the weekend but moving towards Bermuda. However, forecasters said the storm's size is likely to create high surf and rip currents along eastern US coastline within the next five days.
