The average American worker spends 47% of their annual income on household expenses, according to a report by DOXO.

The median U.S. household income sits at $84,583 in 2026, the data showed, with the typical consumer on pace to spend $39,468 of that total on house bills. Meanwhile, DOXO said $24,997 of the overall total would be spent on the most essential expenses.

According to DOXO, the median monthly cost for the most essential bills are:

  • Mortgage and Rent at $1,769 and $1,453, respectively.
  • Auto Loan and Auto Insurance at $480 and $108, respectively.
  • Electric, Cable & Internet at $125 and $124, respectively.
  • Mobile Phone, Water & Sewer at $98 and $87, respectively.
  • Health and Life Insurance at $80 and $60, respectively.
  • Alarm & Security at $76.
  • Gas, Waste & Recycling at $71 each.

During the ffirst half of 2026, auto insurance premiums are projected to rise for over a third of U.S. states.

Auto coverage rose three percent nationally from 2024 to 2025, compared to a drastic 18% jump the previous year, suggesting rates may be stabilizing. In 2026, the average driver driver will pay $2,256 in annual auto insurance premiums.

At the same time, the average homeowner will pay $2,543 a year for coverage although rates can vary greatly by state.

"Consumers face double‑digit increases in many ZIP codes," said David Seider, chief commercial officer at TheZebra.com.

"Inflation is raising rebuilding and repair costs; a growing number of insurers are pulling back from high‑risk areas; and extreme weather events are causing soaring claims," he added. "As homes age and climate‑driven disasters mount, we expect premiums to continue to rise. By shopping around, comparing their options, bundling insurance, and even investing in home resilience improvements, savvy homeowners can limit cost shocks and better protect their coverage in this ever-shifting market."
