Extreme weather can cause massive home damage, putting trillions in U.S. property value at risk each year.

In the last decade, the United States saw over $1.1 trillion in weather damage, a record high, according to data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Common types of damage include:

  • Flooding, which can damage home interiors and foundations and lead to mold.
  • Wind and hail, which can destroy roofs, windows and siding.
  • Wildfires, which can engulf entire homes and also cause toxic soot damage to homes that remain standing.

Hurricanes and severe convective storms are some of the most damaging natural disasters for U.S. homes.

Severe weather can be costly, with homeowners facing deductible payments and out-of-pocket costs for hotels and repairs.

The slideshow above highlights gifts that can help homeowners better prepare for extreme weather.
