Spurred on by seedy social media challenges and an overall increase in car thefts left Hyundai and Kia models ranking heavily on the
National Insurance Crime Bureau's annual list of most stolen vehicles. Overall, auto thefts increased 1% in 2023, the NICB reported. Hyundai had two vehicles ranked in the top 10, while Kia had four models in the top 10, data from the NICB showed. Thefts of these vehicles hit such a boiling point that some insurance carriers
reportedly considered curtailing coverage. Kia models newer than 2011 and Hyundai cars newer than 2015 were being targeted as a design flaw, particularly the lack of engine immobilizers, allowed them to be started and operated without a key, according to
previous reports dating back to 2022. The Ford F-150, which has traditionally been one of the most targeted vehicles, was nearly bumped off this year's top 10 list. The Chevy Silverado was the only other pickup to make the top 10 list this year.
The slideshow above highlights the rest of the most stolen vehicles in America during 2023. According to the NICB, more than 85% of passenger vehicles reported stolen are recovered. Slightly more than one-third of stolen vehicles are retrieved within a day of the theft being reported and 45% are found within two days. To prevent vehicle theft, the NICB recommends:
- Park in well-lit areas.
- Close and lock all windows and doors when you park.
- Hide valuables out of sight, such as in the glove box or trunk.
- Do not leave your keys in your vehicle.
- Do not leave the area while your vehicle is running.
- If your vehicle is stolen, call law enforcement and your insurer immediately because reporting a vehicle as soon as possible after it is stolen increases the chance of recovery.
