Just ahead of RISKWORLD 2024, the massive annual risk management convention happening this year in San Diego, RIMS®, the risk management society, announced the winner of its annual Risk Manager of the Year Award.

Calls went out in the fall for this longstanding honor, which aims to raise the profile of the risk management profession as well as the outstanding programs that honorees have implemented within their organizations.

In this episode of the Insurance Speak podcast, listeners get to know this year's winner: Steve Robles is a 30-year risk management veteran who was selected for the honor due to his "creativity, imagination, and ingenuity in developing truly transformative risk programs."

Robles recently retired from the County of Los Angeles, where he served most recently as assistant CEO. Under Robles' leadership, the county developed a program that addressed its evolving risks and accounted for 100,000 employees, 38 departments, a $44.6 billion budget, 10 million residents, 88 cities and more than 120 unincorporated communities.

In this conversation, Robles talks about the rewards and challenges of managing risk for such a massive municipality, along with what keeps him up at night, and his thoughts on such current events as the recent nationwide campus protests in response to Israel's war against Hamas.

RIMS also announced the following 2024 honors:

  • Eamonn Cunningham, president of the RIMS Australasia Chapter, received the Harry & Dorothy Goodell Award for lifetime achievement;
  • Julie Bean, risk management director for the Chamberlain Group, received the Ron Judd "Heart of RIMS" Award;

  • Chelsea Andrusiak, insurance and risk analyst at Federated Co-operative Limited, received the Rising Risk Professional of the Year Award;
