Where are people in the United States migrating?

The number of Americans who move each year has trended downward over the last decade, but there were still an estimated 8.2 million people who moved state-to-state in 2022. Millennials made up over a third (34%) of those state-to-state moves, according to StorageCafe, making them the largest generation of movers in the U.S. Many of these 2.8 million Millennial movers opted to relocate to southern states like Texas, Georgia and Florida in the hunt for a more affordable cost of living and more job opportunities. In fact, the South performed the best across all generations who relocated in 2022. According to StorageCafe's analysis of Census data, it was the only region to show a net population gain for the year at +689,436. In comparison, the Midwest saw net migration of -102,788, the Northeast saw net migration of -306,689, and the West region saw net migration of -279,959. State that experienced the lowest net migration overall in 2022 were: California: -345,925 New York: -247,561 Illinois: -109,585 New Jersey: -92.076 Maryland: -61,891 In the slideshow above, we'll look at the ten U.S. states with the highest levels of migration, according to StorageCafe's analysis.
