Despite the potential for crowded facilities, scheduling mishaps or any number of other common headaches inherent to holiday travel, 115.2 million people will travel more than 50 miles from home for end-of-year merrymaking, according to AAA.

"This year-end holiday forecast, with an additional 2.5 million travelers compared to last year, mirrors what AAA Travel has been observing throughout 2023," , AAA Travel Senior Vice President Paula Twidale said in an early December press release. "More Americans are investing in travel, despite the cost, to make memories with loved ones and experience new places."

In the U.S., this year's total number of domestic travelers increased 2.2% over 2022 and represented the second highest number of travelers since 2000, when AAA first started tracking holiday travel.
