Since 2004, online companies have been the most prone to losing consumers' personal data, according to an analysis from VPN Overview. In that timeframe, online companies have seen 53 major data breach events and have lost more than 5 billion pieces of data. The largest reported data breach came from the hacking of Yahoo in 2013, according to VPN Overview. The event exposed some 3 billion records and impacted every Yahoo user. Financial services, including insurance, saw the third most data breaches during the period VPN Overview analyzed. The biggest breach in the sector involved the hacking of First American Corporation's website. The 2019 event exposed some 855 million records, including bank account details, social security numbers, wire transactions and other mortgage paperwork dating back to 2003. The above slideshow reveals the 10 industries that have seen the most major data breaches since 2004, according to VPN Overview. This list comes on the heels of research showing that data breaches have declined around 4% during the first half of this year, according to the Identity Theft Resource Center (ITRC). According to Eva Velasquez, ITRC president and CEO, the recent declines could be a bit misleading, as around 40% of data breach notices issued during the first half didn't include basic information such as attack vector. Further, 39% of breach notices didn't include details on the number of victims. "Also, these trends could quickly be reversed simply by a few large breaches or a handful of smaller compromises," Velasquez said in a release. Related:
