Since 2004, more than 14.9 billion data breach events have occurred, according to Surfshark. This total is likely higher, as 31.5% of all breached email accounts didn't contain country of residence information for the victim. The virtual private network (VPN) provider reported that a single email account is breached on average of three times. Surfshark reported that each leaked email address is accompanied by 2.3 additional data points. During the studied timeframe, the U.S. saw the most breached accounts, accounting for 15.4% of all breached email addresses globally since 2004, according to Surfshark. Looking at the continent, North America accounted for 17.6% of all global breaches. Statistically, the average person in North America has had their online account details leaked around four times since 2004. The U.S. accounted for 9 in 10 breaches in North America. Russia accounted for 14.6% of total global breaches since 2004, according to Surfshark. The country also has the highest number of breached accounts per capita with 1,489 per 100 people. This is nearly eight times higher than the global average of 191 breached accounts per 100 people.
