Each year, NeighborhoodScout releases their list of the 100 most dangerous cities in the United States. Their research compares data about violent crimes, including murder, rape, robbery and aggravated assault among cities with more than 25,000 people.

Outside of their top ten most dangerous cities, which we explore in the slideshow above, other findings from the 2022 list include:

  • Salt Lake City, Utah returned to the list (at number 80) for the first time since 2018 with a 26% year-over-year increase in violent crime.
  • Terre Haute, Indiana is the list newcomer with the highest violent crime rate. Violent crime in the city increased 502% from the previous year, which landed them at number 20 on NeighborhoodScout's list.
  • While Iowa managed to keep all of its cities off the list from 2019 to 2021, the state returned this year with two cities, Council Bluffs and Ottumwa, at numbers 89 and 94, respectively.
  • The majority of cities on the 2022 list have appeared on previous "most dangerous" lists. You can view the whole list of NeighborhoodScout's 100 most dangerous cities here.
