Memorial Day is soon upon us, and with it, the official start of summer. As the three day weekend approaches, many individuals plan on traveling with friends and family. In fact, more than 41.5 million Americans are expected to hit the roads this year, according to CNBC.

While some fly over the weekend, many choose to drive despite the rising price of gasoline. Unsurprisingly, the influx of vehicles on the road results in congested highways. After a long journey, the last thing any traveler wants to encounter is a snag with their hotel or rental reservation.

Squaremouth, a travel insurance comparison site, recently revealed six vacation nightmares their travelers have reported. They also explained why these situations don't fall under travel insurance coverage. Of course, there are many scenarios that are covered by travel insurance, such as terrorism, inclement weather or a natural disaster, among others.

Whether you're simply driving down the coast or planning a big getaway overseas, don't let these six travel scenarios hinder the start of your summer.
