Arianna Huffington, president and editor-in-chief of HuffingtonPost Media Group, delivered the closing keynote for RIMS 2015 onWednesday to a room packed with risk professionals. Her message wasclear: Get more sleep.

Huffington promoted her new book, Thrive, in whichshe recounts her personal journey with discovering the importanceof getting an appropriate amount of sleep. Huffington spoke of howshe overworked herself to the point of exhaustion, leading to aneventual "crash and burn." What she learned from the experience isthat taking care of oneself will lead to great success in life.

Huffington compared getting the right amountof sleep to an oxygen mask dropping in an airplane. Safetyregulations instruct passengers to put their own mask on firstbefore helping those around them. Huffington says the same goes forsleep: When you're at your best, you're better able to help andwork with those around you.

|

She also spoke about how we as a society have become addicted totechnology. She recommended disconnecting oneself from theirdevice, at least when it's time to sleep. Many of us are in thehabit of keeping our phones near our beds, which we tend to look atin the middle of the night. Huffington recommended putting yourphone on silent at night and keeping it away from the bed. She alsosuggested a game for friends to play when going out to eattogether: Everyone puts their phone in the middle of the table, andwhoever checks theirs first has to pay the bill.

|

Huffington then took questions from theaudience, who were eager to hear her suggestions for dealing withtheir own stress and helping loved ones dealing with similarissues. Her keynote concluded with a standing ovation from RIMS2015 attendees.
