Thirty-two people were injured in the early morning hours of March 24 after a Chicago Transit Authority train derailed and hit a platform at O'Hare International Airport, with its front car landing on an escalator and stairs.
The accident happened around 2:50 a.m. The more than 50 firefighters and paramedics responding to the scene first worked to determine whether anyone was trapped under the cars, Chicago Fire Commissioner Joe Santiago said.
USA Today reports the train operator may have dozed off toward the end of her shirt, accord to the union representing transit workers. A federal investigator also told USA Today an emergency track-side braking system activated but failed to stop the train in time, which means the accident could have been caused by both human error and mechanical failure.
