Harleysville Insurance president and COO Michael Brownewill retire effective May 1.

Browne, a highly-decorated Vietnam veteran, was CEO ofHarleysville when Nationwide merger with the insurer in 2012. He played acritical role as the insurers combined, Nationwide says.

He was named Harleysville CEO in 2004, replacing Walter Bateman,after heading the international insurance practice at the law firmReed Smith in Philadelphia. He has also served as the insurancecommissioner of Pennsylvania from 1980-1983 and held leadershippositions in the U.S. Department of Transportation.

Kevin Toth will become senior regional vice president forHarleysville Insurance and will serve as the senior leader at theHarleysville, Pa. headquarters after Browne's retirement.
