Yacht fires are typically fought by firefighters who have beentrained and have experience in buildings and homes, but yacht fireshave unique characteristics with the tendency to spread rapidly toother yachts in crowded facilities.

Specialized techniques are needed to fight yacht fire withwater, since a sunken ship could result in higher losses andpollution expenses.

Eighteen firefighters from Ft. Lauderdale Fire Rescue and DavieFire Rescue received the training over three days. Theone-of-a-kind program included classroom instruction, a controlledburn simulation and a yacht facility tour.
