Twelve insurers and two insurance brokers achieved a score of100 in the 11th edition of the Human Rights Campaign'sCorporate Equality Index joining a recordnumber of companies extending sexual orientation and genderidentity protections in the workplace.

Of the 12 insurance companies, five are primarily property andcasualty companies.

Those five companies are:

  • AAA Northern California, Nevada & Utah InsuranceExchange.
  • American International Group.
  • Chubb.
  • The Hartford Financial Services Group Inc.
  • Progressive Corp.

The insurance brokers that scored 100 were Aon Corp. and Marsh& McLennan Companies.

Other insurers on the list that achieved a perfect scorewere:

  • Blue Cross Blue Shield of Florida Inc.
  • Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Inc.
  • ING North America Insurance Corp.
  • MetLife Inc.
  • Nationwide
  • Prudential Financial Inc.
  • Sun Life Financial Inc. (U.S.)

Other national P&C insurers on the list that did not score100, include:

  • State Farm Group (score of 95).
  • Travelers Companies Inc. (score of 90).
  • Allstate Corp. (score of 85).
  • CNA Insurance (score of 85).
  • Zurich North America (score of 65).

To earn a perfect score, companies must adopt policies, benefitsand business practices that demonstrate corporate commitment tolesbian, gay, bi-sexual and transgender (LGBT) workers and thecommunity at large.

The HRC says a record 252 businesses achieved a rating of 100percent in this report. By contrast, HRC notes that in the firstyear of the survey a decade ago, 13 businesses scored 100.

Invitations to the web-based survey were sent out to 1,848businesses. Of that number, 530 submitted surveys, and 688 wereofficially rated. There were 54 new businesses that participated inthis year's survey.

HRC says companies that did not submit a survey were rated ifthey had submitted one in the past and the information remainsaccurate, or if HRC “has obtained sufficient information to providean individual rating.”

The LGBT community has growing economic clout, notes HRC, withbuying power of $790 billion.
