It's well known that Americans have gotten heavier over theyears, such that 37.5 percent of adults were considered obese in2009-2010 by the Centers for Disease Control. This higher weightadds to the chances of an individual having hypertension, diabetes,stroke, cancer and other health problems. Likewise, the BabyBoomers are aging at a rapid rate. The Bureau of Labor Statisticsshows that workers 55 or older numbered 28 million in 2008—and by2018 that number was expected to grow to 40 million.

So what does weight plus age get us? Overweight older workerswho, when injured on or off the job, are often out for a greaterlength of time due to these two factors.

While older workers are less likely to get hurt on the job, theytake longer to heal and to return to work. Even if the worker isnot injured on the job but was injured by being a weekend warrior,that person will be out for a longer period of time than a coworkerwho is younger and more fit.

So, what's an employer to do with all these “fluffy” cubicledenizens who sit in desk chairs for eight hours a day? Recess!

I'm not talking about taking everyone outside for a game ofkickball, but more and more companies are developing wellnessgroups that encourage employees to get fit. Some actually haveonsite classes to encourage workers to get and stay fit. Whatemployee wouldn't like to have a 10-minute massage every now andagain to reduce stress? Some companies have quick breaks whereemployees get up and line dance or do some other quick activity toget them out of their chairs and moving. The more employees move,the better off they are—and if they are injured, either on or offthe job, the better the chance of a speedy return.

So come on bosses, let's organize some onsite ways for employeesto be a little more fit than before. It benefits everyone.
