The Weather Channel companies (TWCC), in partnership with The Travelers Companies, Inc., announces today the launch of "My Friends' Weather," a Facebook Open Graph application on weather.com. In time for the peak of hurricane season, the tool will allow users to see who among their friends and family may be affected by breaking weather news.
Through Breaking Now weather alerts on weather.com, users can find out when major events happen—such as threatening tropical storms, disastrous tornado touchdowns and other news—and then share that information seamlessly via Facebook, directly to the people who may be impacted.
"As communication channels evolve, we must look beyond the traditional alert tone you get on radio or TV, or even simple mobile push messages. We are building a service that delivers weather alerts in a very personal way, coming from your closest connections, so you know when they matter most to you," says Mike Finnerty, vice president of weather.com at TWCC. "Most timeline apps only show your friends what you're doing, but our integration shows you which of your friends might be at risk in a severe weather event and lets you share that alert with them in a one-on-one way that makes it super personal and relevant."
