Tropical Storm Nate, one of three current Atlantic tropical cyclones, appears to be tracking south of yesterday's forecast and now looks as if it will make landfall in the middle portion of Mexico.

Yesterday, the extended forecasted track for Nate had it possibly making landfall near the Texas-Mexico border.

Currently, according to the National Hurricane Center (NHC), Nate is on track to become a hurricane tomorrow morning before striking the east coast of Mexico on Sunday.

A hurricane watch is in effect from Tampico, Mexico to Veracruz. A tropical storm warning is in effect for Chilitepec to Celestun.

However, an AccuWeather report today by Expert Senior Meteorologist Alex Sosnowski notes that reliable path projections for Nate are “nearly impossible beyond a few days” because the storm remains in weak steering currents in the Gulf of Mexico. The report also notes that Nate is a slow-moving storm.

Tropical Storm Maria, meanwhile, is speeding along near the Antilles, causing tropical storm warnings and watches for islands there.

The AccuWeather report says the storm is taking a track west of the one Hurricane Katia took. “How far west is the problem,” the report says. “The last thing anyone wants is a track similar to Irene, which would raise new flooding concerns, among other things, from the Antilles to the Bahamas and much of the East Coast of the U.S.”

The report notes that Maria may turn sooner than Irene did and curve out to sea like Katia.

As for Hurricane Katia, the latest NHC forecast shows that it's turn east toward the open sea has begun. AccuWeather says the storm appears on track to target northwest Europe after passing Canada.
