Government data show that each day, more than 10 teens are killed nationwide in motor vehicle crashes, making it the number one killer of this age group in the U.S. Due to inexperience and risky behavior, young drivers are more likely to be involved in a fatal crash than any other age group, and the risk is highest during their first years of driving.

A new teen driving act introduced in Congress seeks to slow this dangerous trend and spare thousands of families the heartbreaking loss of a teenage child.

The Safe Teen and Novice Driver Uniform Protection (STAND UP) Act, introduced by Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, D-New York, would set national standards for graduated driver licensing (GDL) programs, which have been proven to reduce deaths and injuries among the least experienced drivers.
