Zurich Financial Services Group named Thomas Buberl, 35, as its chief executive officer of Zurich Switzerland. His appointment takes effect Jan. 1.

Mr. Buberl will join Zurich on Nov. 1. After a two-month transition period, he will succeed Markus Hongler, who will become CEO of Zurich Insurance Ireland, Ltd., as announced in May.

Mr. Buberl joins Zurich from AXA Winterthur, AXA's Swiss insurance arm, where he was head of distribution and a member of the executive board. Prior to that, he worked as manager at The Boston Consulting Group.
