Novato, Calif.-based Fireman's Fund Insurance Company said its corporate philanthropy program, Fireman's Fund Heritage, awarded more than $6.3 million in grants last year to U.S. fire departments.

The insurer said more than 400 fire departments and fire service organizations received individual grants. The money was used to help provide funding for needed equipment, training and community education programs.

Equipment and gear included thermal imaging cameras, turnout gear, extrication equipment, portable radios, ventilation saws, nozzles, self-contained breathing apparatus sets and medical defibrillators.
