California has expanded its low cost auto program to 20 more counties in the state enabling low income drivers to purchase auto liability coverage for under $400 a year.

State Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner made the announcement today saying that the California Low Cost Automobile Insurance program would be expanded.

The program is now available in 42 counties in the state, providing eligible low-income, good drivers with state required liability coverage. The department said that since its inception, 34,161 policies have been issued. Policies are issued by licensed insurers and administered by the California Automobile Assigned Risk Plan.
