California has expanded its low cost auto program to 20 morecounties in the state enabling low income drivers to purchase autoliability coverage for under $400 a year.

State Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner made the announcementtoday saying that the California Low Cost Automobile Insuranceprogram would be expanded.

The program is now available in 42 counties in the state,providing eligible low-income, good drivers with state requiredliability coverage. The department said that since its inception,34,161 policies have been issued. Policies are issued by licensedinsurers and administered by the California Automobile AssignedRisk Plan.

The plan is not subsidized by taxpayers. Rates are set in eachcounty so that premiums are sufficient to cover losses and expensein each county, the department said.

Mr. Poizner announced he is seeking to expand the program intothe state's 16 remaining counties.
