U.S. Sen. Ben Nelson, D-Neb., was named the 2007 Federal Legislator of the Year by the National Association of Mutual Insurance Companies during its annual conference held earlier this week in Grapevine, Texas.

"Senator Nelson is known for his exceptional knowledge and understanding of the property-casualty industry as well as the important role that insurance plays in the economy," said NAMIC President and Chief Executive Officer Chuck Chamness in a statement.

"He is a firm believer in states' rights and understands the importance of the states' role in regulating the property-casualty insurance industry, and that any type of reform should take place at the state level," Mr. Chamness said.
