WASHINGTON–After a federal study commission suggested Congressconsider removing antitrust exemptions for insurers, trade groupslooked at their recommendations and reacted with a positivespin.

According to the insurance organizations' reading, the AntitrustModernization Commission report released Tuesday is suggestingCongress review the limited antitrust exemption the industry enjoysunder the McCarran-Ferguson Act, not repeal it.

Dennis Kelly, a spokesman for the American InsuranceAssociation, said “the report contains some good news: It does notspecifically recommend repeal of the McCarran-Fergusonexemption.”
