The number of workplace fatalities in 2005 decreased slightly from 2004, according to a recent report by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
The report, "Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries in 2005," indicated that the number of fatal injuries occurring at work totaled 5,702 in 2005, down from 5,764 the previous year. The fatality rate also fell from 4.1 per 100,000 employees in 2004 to 4.0 in 2005.
Other key findings in the report specify that fatal falls declined seven percent last year from an all-time high in 2004. Additionally, roofers' fatal work injuries dropped by 44 percent, and deaths among women in 2005 were the lowest annual total recorded by BLS. According to the report, Hispanic worker fatalities increased slightly last year, yet the number of Hispanic employees rose as well.
