More burglaries happen in July and August than any other months of the year, according to the Insurance Information Institute. Losses due to burglaries totaled $3.5 billion in 2004, and residential burglaries averaged $1,642.

Yet virtual break-ins are just as damaging, said the I.I.I. Identity theft is on the rise, with around 8.9 million victims in 2005. The average loss in an identity fraud case is over $6,000. "A burglar can easily obtain credit card information, social security numbers or other identification information by going over personal documents in a home or stealing the family computer," said Jeanne Salvatore, I.I.I. senior vice president.
