Safeco is seriously planning to direct market its auto insurancebusiness over the Internet to target consumers it isn't reachingnow via its traditional independent agency channel.

The Seattle-based insurer has approached its independent agentpartners to field suggestions and get feedback on its plan to tryand capture a customer demographic it is failing to access by goingthe Web route, according to its president and chief operatingofficer, Michael LaRocco.

“We have made no final decisions,” said Mr. LaRocco. “What wehave very seriously decided to do is investigate the possibility ofsupplementing the independent agency channel with some directsales, on a very limited basis, of our automobile insurancepolicies through the Internet.”
