Former Federal Emergency Management Agency Director James LeeWitt, now co-chairman of a group promoting a federal catastropheprogram, said yesterday his organization is seeking input frominsurers to develop a new approach for managing disaster risk.

Mr. Witt, a leader of, made his remarks toinsurance executives at the 2006 Annual Conference of the AmericanAssociation of Insurance Services in Sarasota, Fla.

According to a report of his remarks from AAIS, Mr. Wittemphasized the importance of sound building and land use policiesto avoid and mitigate losses from natural and man-made hazards.
