Insurance A Focus For NCSL New Committee Head

NU Online News Service, Sept. 8, 9 :43 a.m. EDT?The newly named chairwoman of the National Conference of State Legislatures financial services committee said she will make overseeing insurance regulatory modernization one of her top priorities.

Delaware State Rep. Donna Stone, R-Dover South, commented that "Financial services modernization presents many challenges for the state-federal relationship."

Ms. Stone concerning regulatory modernization, she said the committee "will work with states to enact model legislation and oversee other modernization efforts in order to preserve sovereign state authority over insurance regulation."

The announcement of Ms. Stone' being named chairman noted that the financial services standing committee is responsible for developing policies that guide NCSL's activities on Capitol Hill and within the Bush Administration.

It said NCSL policies stress opposition to unfunded federal mandates, prevention of unnecessary preemption of state laws, and protection of state revenue sources.
