Push Has Come To Shove In Patients’ Rights Debate

There is a bottom line in the debate raging in Congress about legislation creating a “Patients’ Bill of Rights.” The bottom line is that President George W. Bush is never going to sign into law any bill that gives patients sweeping rights to sue their health plans for unlimited sums in any court that will hear them out.

For that reason alone, those who are serious about quickly giving patients more leverage in disputes with insurers over treatments and claims payments, as well as assuring reasonable access to emergency care and to specialists ought to accept this political reality and send a bill to the White House that actually has a chance of becoming law this year.
