Locked-in rates: In a declining interest rate environment, borrowers may be stuck paying above-market rates for years. The slow principal reduction may prevent traditional lenders from refinancing the loan balance into a shorter-term loan.
Opportunity cost: Extended interest payments can disguise unaffordable transactions and tie up capital that could fuel growth. The extra savings could be used to invest in the agency's growth through acquisitions, producer recruitment or digital tools — all of which help create value.
Slower deleveraging: Longer terms limit future borrowing capacity and reduce financial flexibility due to persistent leverage.
Potential conflicts: Borrowing from an insurance company partner may introduce restrictions or perceived conflicts of interest.
Tax limitations: Many agencies are pass-through entities (S Corps, LLCs or sole proprietors). Under current federal tax rules, the 20% deduction for qualified business income reduces the benefit of interest deductibility, making long-term interest less advantageous.

Agencies with shorter-term loans build a stronger track record, making it easier to refinance or secure new financing when opportunities arise.

Business debt and growth strategies

Debt management directly impacts an agency's ability to seize future opportunities. Acquisitive borrowers understand the need for outside capital using appropriate timeframes like five to seven years in order to reduce leverage at a pace to accommodate a steady volume of acquisitions. That way, they are more prudently managing the risk-reward equation.
