Cost of living is a major factor for many when deciding where to settle down and purchase a home. On top of mortgage costs, homeowners also must consider where they will be able to find affordable, comprehensive homeowners insurance — which can be a challenge no matter where you land in the U.S.

According to the Census Bureau, more than 5.3 million households paid over $4,000 for property insurance in 2023. They found that it wasn’t just areas like "tornado alley" or along hurricane-vulnerable coasts where homeowners are paying the most for coverage. At least one state from each of the four Census regions (Northeast, South, Midwest and West) made their list of the most expensive places to insure a mortgaged home.

The ten states that comprised the Census’ list of the most expensive places to insure a home were:

• Florida ($2,273)
• Louisiana ($2,140)
• Oklahoma ($2,041)
• Colorado ($1,974)
• Texas ($1,957)
• Nebraska ($1,814)
• Kansas ($1,773)
• Mississippi ($1,625)
• Minnesota ($1,598)
• Rhode Island ($1,538)
