Around 90% of Americans plan to
travel in 2024, with 63% of those intending to take a road trip, according to a survey from
IPX1031. While driving to your vacation destination comes with some benefits, like lower costs and more
flexibility, road trips come with their own set of risks.
In the slideshow above, we'll look at the steps you should take to prepare before leaving for your trip, according to Kelly Blue Book (KBB). Once you've concluded your preparations and hit the road, KBB recommends the following advice to ensure you have a safe trip:
- Drive at non-peak times to avoid heavier traffic.
- Limit your nighttime driving to ensure all drivers are fully awake while operating the vehicle. If you begin to feel fatigued while driving – no matter the time of day – stop to rest or switch drivers to avoid putting yourself and others on the roadway at risk.
- Designate a passenger to handle any necessary apps – like navigation and music tools – so that the driver can keep their full attention on the road.
- Take frequent breaks to get out and walk around to help avoid becoming drowsy.
- If there are other licensed drivers in your car, consider splitting driving responsibilities.
- Ensure everyone in the vehicle wears their seatbelt.
