According to Forbes Advisor, 91.7% of households in the United States had at least one vehicle in 2021. Overall, the number of registered vehicles in the U.S. increased 3.66% between 2017 and 2021, with trucks being the most popular type of vehicle.

The states with the highest numbers of registered vehicles per 1,000 licensed drivers in 2021 tended to be more rural areas, with Montana topping the list at 2,492.55 vehicle registrations per 1,000 licensed drivers. South Dakota, Wyoming, North Dakota and Iowa rounded out the top five.
