For 76% of American motorists, getting into an accident with a drunk driver leaving a party is the roadway hazard they are most worried about during the holiday season, according to a study by Forbes Advisor. Overall, 54% of U.S. drivers are worried about getting into an auto accident during the holidays. Next to drunk drivers, other major holiday road worries include distracted driving, ice and snow on the road, aggressive and reckless drivers and drowsy motorists. Unsurprisingly, New Year's Eve is the day drivers worry the most about drunk drivers, while 17% say they worry most about drunk drivers on Christmas, Kwanzaa and Hanukkah. The legal and insurance consequences are harsh for those foolish enough to think they can drive inebriated. In addition to fines and other penalties courts might impose, car insurance rates increase an average of 76% following a DUI, Forbes Advisor reported. This is much higher than other cost-raising incidents, such as an accident with an injury, which can cause premiums to rise 47%. The slideshow above reveals the 10 states that see the most drunk driving incidents and accidents, according to Forbes Advisor. The state (excluding Washington D.C.) with the fewest incidents was New Jersey, which saw the fewest people killed in drunk driving accidents and the third lowest number of drunk drivers under the age of 21. New Jersey was also among the states where people are the least likely to see a friend or family member drive drunk when leaving a holiday party. Related: |
