The national average for annual home insurance costs is $1,445, but premiums vary widely by state, according to ValuePenguin.com, which notes the least expensive state sees annual costs below $600.

While rates vary, overall, the cost of home insurance has been increasing, according to the National Association of Insurance Commissioners, which reported gains of nearly 47% during the past decade.
