Nearly 70% of all consumer complaints submitted to the ten largest U.S. home and auto insurers involve claims, according to data from the National Association of Insurance Commissioners and reported by ValuePenguin. "It's no surprise that claim issues got the most attention among consumers," writes Matt Timmons, technical writer at ValuePenguin. "Handling one of these covered events, such as a car accident or theft in the home, is stressful enough. But the promise of getting fair and prompt reimbursement after a loss is the reason you buy insurance in the first place." ValuePenguin found that residents in some states experienced more problems involving claims. One-hundred percent of the complaints out of Vermont concerned claims, while claims accounted for more than 90% of insurance complaints in Missouri, West Virginia and Montana. However, other states saw the majority of complaints come out of different areas of insurance. For example, 79% of complaints in Maryland related to underwriting, and half of the grievances in Nevada related to policyholder service, says ValuePenguin.
