Private passenger auto insurance is arguably the most wide-spread coverage among U.S. consumers, with more than 221 million drivers nationwide as of 2016. In recently released market share reports from the
National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC), data suggests a growing private passenger auto market. In 2019, private passenger auto carriers and groups achieved more than $253 billion in direct written premiums, up from
$246 billion in 2018. Additionally, the top five writers of the business wrote approximately $6 billion more in private passenger auto coverage in 2019 than the year prior. As the name suggests, private passenger auto insurance covers vehicles that are used for personal needs, such as commuting to and from work and running errands. However, confusion in coverage terms can lead to coverage gaps in
gig economy workers, such as Uber or Lyft drivers, who mistakenly believe their private auto policy covers them while "on the job."
