A series of tornadoes and severe storms tore through Nashville and central Tennessee several hours before sunrise on Tuesday, March 3, devastating lives and communities as victims slept. Around 2 a.m. Tuesday, tornadoes of at least EF-3 intensity touched down in Nashville and Wilson County, according to the National Weather Service, destroying over 140 buildings and claiming at least 24 lives with many reported missing. One tornado ripped through homes and businesses across a 10-mile stretch of Nashville that included parts of downtown. Reports indicate more than three dozen buildings were destroyed. In Putnam County, a second tornado caused extensive property damage across a 2-mile stretch, damaging more than 100 structures and displacing homes clean off their foundations.

CoreLogic releases early damage estimates

CoreLogic's Tornado Path Map currently estimates that approximately 250 square miles were impacted by the damaging effects of the tornadoes, with Nashville being the most damaged. Based on researchers' current estimate of ravaged residential and commercial properties across a 50-mile-long stretch of Tennessee, CoreLogic says it expects the total damage to property from this event to exceed $1 billion. Additionally, CoreLogic estimates that 22,389 structures had a 30% or greater damage probability from the 50-mile-long Tennessee tornadic event, which extended well beyond the Nashville area.
