At the Women & Diversity: Expanding Opportunities in Insurance conference in New York last week, Elixabete Larrea Tamayo, partner at McKinsey & Company, gave a presentation on findings from McKinsey's 5th annual Women in the Workplace 2019 report in her panel, "Accelerating Gender Equality in Insurance." With March being Women's History Month, the conversation was timely. Tamayo reflected on five years of McKinsey's research data and insights, and one main overarching conclusion. There's been some progress over the last five years as more women have risen to the top levels of companies. Since 2015, the representation of women in the C-suite has increased from 17% to 21%. But still, McKinsey's 2019 report found that women continue to be underrepresented at every level, proving there is still much more work to be done to achieve true gender parity in the workplace.

Insurance companies leading in D&I

As the insurance industry and businesses across all sectors continue to work towards new and advancing diversity and inclusion goals, there are a few companies leading the charge. Great Place to Work recently released its annual ranking of the Best Workplaces for Diversity in 2019. Ranking companies are ones where underrepresented and historically discriminated against people both experience their workplace as a great place to work for all and are represented at every level in the organization, including the board. To determine the Best Workplaces for Diversity, Great Place to Work analyzed confidential survey feedback from more than 4.8 million U.S. employees. The Best Workplaces for Diversity list focuses on the experiences of women, people of color, LGBTQ people, employees who are Boomers or older, and people who have disabilities. In the slideshow above, discover which P&C insurance companies were named among the Best Workplaces for Diversity in 2019. See also:
