The winter months pose several obvious hazards from snow and ice, but there are a number of other risks that arise as people spend more time indoors or travel in inclement weather. The chance of fires increases, as do the dangers from carbon monoxide poisoning, burst pipes and ice dams. Jessica Hanson Hanna, senior vice president of public affairs for the American Property Casualty Insurance Association (APCIA) said that winter storms "cause more than $1 billion in insured losses each year."
