Cyber security isn't just about social media passwords andcredit card information anymore.

The “Internet of Things” has changed all that, as more and moreeveryday devices are being created that include built-in Webconnectivity.

|

And this sector is growing fast. According to Cisco, there willbe 50 billion Web-connected devices in use worldwide by the end ofthe decade and the list includes everything from connected medicaldevices, to home automation, smart appliances and even connectedvehicles.

|

Now that so much of our everyday lives are digitally connectedto the wider world, a whole host of new opportunities have openedup for hackers, many of which would have been inconceivable just afew years ago. In fact, according to a newstudy released this month by HP, as many as 70% of theWeb-connected devices currently on the market are vulnerable toattack.

|

Yes, that includes your smartphone. And your television. Andmaybe even your car.

|

As part of the study, HP Security Research reviewed 10 of themost popular Internet of Things devices, including connected TVs,webcams, home thermostats, remote power outlets, sprinklercontrollers, home automation systems and garage door openers. Theresults were … troubling, to say the least.
