Pets Best InsuranceServices recently released lists of the top 10 states for doginsurance and the top 10 states for cat insurance. Among the stateswith the most policies written for both species are New York,Texas, and Colorado.

Pet insurance is increasingly becoming a popular option in theU.S., according to the pet insurance agency. Caring for pets canget expensive, especially when they experience an emergency illnessor accident that can land them in the vet's office. An insurancepolicy helps cover the costs that pet owners typically payout-of-pocket.

Pets Best analyzed the number of dogs and cats insured with theagency in 2013 and separated them into the states they reside,ranking the top 10 states with the most insured pets.

The states with the lowest dog enrollment in 2013 includedWyoming, South Dakota and North Dakota. The states with the fewestcat policies were South Dakota, Montana and Vermont.

Despite being available in the U.S. for more than 30 years, anestimated 3% of dog owners and 1% of cat owners in the U.S. havepet insurance, according to the American Pet Products Association's2009-2010 National Pet Owners Survey. This stat is much lower thanother countries. For example, in the UK 54% of dogs and 34% of catshad pet insurance in 2012, according to data from economic andbusiness research firm Timetric.
