Third-party liability from encountering other vehicles on the road is Quality Distribution Inc.'s biggest exposure, says Mike McDonald, vice president of enterprise risk management at QD.

Its second-greatest issue is Workers' Comp. Besides the usual slip-and-fall and strain exposures that apply to most physically demanding workplaces, truckers also are dealing, of course, with super-sized vehicles (and forklifts during loading) that pose both mechanical risks and emit carbon-monoxide fumes and diesel exhaust.

The third-most severe risks are environmental claims resulting from chemical spills.
